10 basics of SEO for your website
10 very simple, very basic things to do on your website for better placement in search results. 1) All of your pages need to have unique titles. The title should have a few main keywords related to the content of the page, but do not make it too long. 2) The description should be exactly that; descriptive of what that page is about. This is also the text that will be displayed under your sites link when it appears in a search result. 3) Keywords in your meta tags are not mandatory, but if you use them, they need to be relevant to that page. Do not go haywire here; 15-20 at most. 4) Doctype. This is primarily for W3C compliancy to help ensure compatability across different browsers. ( http://validator.w3.org/docs/why.html ) 5) h1 / h2 tags primarily let search engine spiders know that the text in these tags is a type of heading, being emphasized more than much of the other text; by placing keywords/phrases in these tags, the search engines take a little more notice. 6) Place javascript and css into their own files, then import them into your site pages. This reduces your page overall size and can improve load times. External css also makes it very easy to change many things on many pages by editing just one file. 7) Images should be optimized for size/quality. Huge image sizes kill your bandwidth, as well as take longer to load in a browser. Your image tags ( img src = ) should also contain the image size and an alt tag, i.e. img src=”someimage.jpg” width=”100″ height=”100″ alt = “description of image/keywords/etc” 8 ) All links should have a title, i.e. a href=”homepage.html” title=”Home page for 123abcxyz.com” 9) An easy to use navigation system, a sitemap for users, and an XML sitemap for search engines that includes all pages that you want crawled/indexed. You should also have a robots.txt file to try to keep search engine spiders out of directories and pages that you don’t want to be seen. 10) Content should always be number 1. If your page has nothing of value, whats the use? |
